Open and Closed Loop Effect

Magnetic samples can be measured in one of two ways as illustrated below

In a closed magnetic circuit, the magnetic flux of the sample being measured , is conducted through a ferrous path, often supplied by an elector magnet, that can also apply the magnetic field used in the measurement. It is important for the sample to fit very closely to the magnetic circuit. It is a contact method of measurement.

In an open magnetic circuit the sample is magnetically in free air. This is a non contact method of measurement. As this measurement is dependent upon the shape of the sample, it is neccesary to convert an Open Magnetic Circuit measurement to a Closed Magnetic Circuit measurement.

MAGNET CHARACTERISATION TECHNOLOGIES

Pulsed Field Magnetometry (PFM)

Pulsed Field Magnetometers apply a “pulse” of magnetic field to generate the applied magnetic field. This has the advantage that the field can be strong enough to saturate any magnetic material.

Vibrating Sample Magnetometry (VSM)

Vibrating Sample Magnetometers vibrate the sample as part of the measurement process. This provides the Fluxmeter element of the system with the dynamic component it requires to make the measurement. The applied field is changed so at each measurement point the field is static and hence no eddy currents to cause problems.

Permeameter Technology

Permeameters use a closed loop form of magnetic measurement.
